Fixed-trip molded case breaker cross reference by trip rating

Meisterline Controls scopes and quotes UL 508A control panels. This page lines up fixed-trip UL 489 molded case circuit breakers from ABB, Allen-Bradley, Eaton, Schneider Electric and Siemens by trip rating, lists each frame’s interrupting rating at 480 V, and shows how each line’s part numbers are built, with the catalog page for each.

Trip ratings side by side

A matching trip rating is a starting point, not an equivalent. Interrupting rating at your voltage, voltage rating (including slash ratings such as 480Y/277 V), pole count, terminals and lugs, and any series or combination rating all have to be checked before a breaker can be substituted. Send the list and we’ll check it against your ratings.

Scope: fixed-trip breakers only. Adjustable-trip breakers go through our Parts Check, where the setting is confirmed.

“Not in the … range” means that line’s catalog prints no fixed-trip, UL-listed breaker at that rating in the frames shown. A larger or adjustable-trip breaker from the same line may exist; those go through the Parts Check. Allen-Bradley 16, 32, 63 and 160 A appear as printed in Rockwell’s tables (pp.33, 37, 42, 46–47); Eaton prints 16, 32, 63 and 160 A for the EG as well but marks them “not UL listed ratings” (V4-T2-171 to 175), and Power Defense prints none of them, so they aren’t shown for Eaton.

Trip rating is the breaker’s continuous ampere rating as printed in the catalog’s selection table. A breaker counts as fixed-trip here only where its own catalog prints the overload (thermal) trip as fixed: ABB “TE = Fixed Thermal Magnetic” (Record Plus) and TMF, with the overload threshold and trip time both “Fixed” (Tmax XT catalog p.61), Allen-Bradley protection type C “Fixed thermal/fixed magnetic”, Eaton Power Defense TFF “Fixed Thermal / Fixed Magnetic” and TFA “Fixed thermal / Adjustable magnetic” (V4-T2-23, 31, 44, 58) and Series G “FF = Fixed fixed”, Square D “Fixed … thermal-magnetic protection”, and Siemens TM210 FTFM (fixed thermal, fixed magnetic) and TM230 FTAM (fixed thermal, adjustable magnetic). Eaton’s VFF and VFA (50 °C) trip units are marked “non UL” and aren’t shown. One row per trip rating; each cell names the frames of that line printed with a fixed-trip breaker at exactly that rating. Lines are in alphabetical order. Poles, voltage and interrupting ratings for each frame are in the frame table below.

UL: only UL 489 circuit breakers whose catalog states the UL listing appear. ABB: “UL489/cUL489 Listed” (BuyLog p.6-7); Tmax XT “comply with UL489 and CSA C22.2 Standards (E116596; E116595; E93565)” (Tmax XT catalog p.16), a UL file number with the standard. Allen-Bradley: “UL Listed” (140G-TD101 pp.19, 31). Eaton: Power Defense “UL 489” (V4-T2-6) and “UL File Number E7819” for each frame (V4-T2-12, 15), a UL file number with the standard; EG “UL and CSA listed: Yes”, to 125 A (V4-T2-165). Square D: “UL listed interrupting ratings” (B-frame, Digest Sec07 p.7-34) and “cULus” (Q-frame, p.7-41). Siemens: “All 3VA5 thermal-magnetic trip and 3VA6 electronic trip circuit breakers are UL listed for reverse feed applications” (Sect17 p.17/6), with the same statement for each 3VA5 frame. Supplementary protectors (UL 1077) are a different product and aren’t listed here.

Frames: poles, voltage and interrupting rating

Interrupting rating is the UL 489 rating in kA rms symmetrical at 480 V AC, by the line’s own interrupting code, for multi-pole breakers. 480 V is the voltage printed for most frames on this page; the one frame without it is a 240 V breaker, and that cell says so. Where 1-pole versions carry no 480 V rating, the cell says so.

Siemens prints “UL listed” for every 3VA5 frame, but never prints the standard number against it. Only the 3VA6 text names UL 489.

The 3VA5 is on this page on that listing statement. If your submittal needs the standard number, ask Siemens for it in writing.

ABB Formula isn’t named in this table: its catalog marks the order-code tables only “(UL and IEC)” (BuyLog pp.6-50 to 6-52), with no UL file number or standard, and Meisterline Controls names a breaker only where the catalog states the UL listing. Lines whose catalogs don’t print the trip as fixed or adjustable (Square D H-, J- and LA/LH-frame thermal-magnetic, Eaton Series C, ABB TEY and E150, Siemens Sentron and BQ) are covered through our Parts Check. Miniature plug-on and bolt-on panelboard breakers, such as ABB Q-Line, aren’t covered on this page.

ABB prints the Tmax XT3S at 35 kA at 480 V in the Tmax XT ordering-code key (p.246, “S … 35” for XT3) and in BuyLog Section 6 (p.6-95, “S (35kA)”). The XT3S ordering table on Tmax XT p.272 heads its rating column “25kA”, the same as the XT3N table above it. This page uses 35 kA, the value printed in both of the other places.

Several lines are not on this page because their catalogs do not print the trip as fixed. The Square D H-frame prints a fixed alternating current magnetic trip with factory-sealed trip units and does not state the thermal trip; the J-frame and the LA and LH print an adjustable magnetic trip without stating the thermal. Eaton Series C prints non-interchangeable trip units, with fixed thermal and adjustable magnetic appearing only in the J and L trip unit keys rather than against the complete breakers. The ABB TEY and E150 print non-interchangeable trip. The Siemens Sentron and BQ do not state it.

This page covers fixed-trip breakers. Send any of the lines above through our Parts Check.

Eaton Series G (EG): the brand is phasing this line down. It stays on this page so a breaker already in a panel can be found.
“Fixed-trip” covers two kinds of trip unit. Fixed thermal, fixed magnetic: nothing on the breaker is set. Fixed thermal, adjustable magnetic (Siemens TM230 FTAM, Sect17 p.17/15): the continuous rating is fixed and the instantaneous pickup is set on the breaker. Both are in the table; Eaton Power Defense PD-3 and PD-4 are fixed thermal, adjustable magnetic (TFA, V4-T2-44, 58). On the Allen-Bradley 140G H and J frames, the same frame is fixed (protection code C) up to 70 A and adjustable thermal (code F) from 80 A (140G-TD101 pp.37, 44, 46), so read the protection code, not just the frame.
Voltage ratings are printed two ways. ABB FB100, ABB Tmax XT1 and XT3, Allen-Bradley 140G G and I frames, Eaton Power Defense PD-1, Eaton EG, Square D B-frame and Siemens 3VA51 are printed with a slash rating such as 600Y/347 V or 600/347 V; Allen-Bradley 140G H and J frames, ABB Tmax XT2 and XT4, Eaton Power Defense PD-2 to PD-4, and Siemens 3VA52 to 3VA59 are printed at a straight 600 V. Compare the voltage rating exactly as printed, including the Y, before substituting.

How each line’s part numbers are built

Each section uses only that line’s own catalog, with the page for every code. Where two pages of the same catalog disagree, the item is left out and noted.

ABB Tmax XT (TMF)

Source: ABB SACE Tmax XT UL/CSA catalog 1SDC210200D0206 (2024-08), PDF pages. The ordering tables print each breaker’s US/CA part number in a row that names the frame, the interrupting rating at 480 V, the frame rating (Iu), the trip unit and the rated current (In), with separate columns for 3 and 4 poles. The catalog doesn’t print a key for the part number’s characters, so this section reads numbers from their table rows rather than decoding them.
