Part number reference · Disconnect switches

Disconnect switch ratings and part numbers

Meisterline Controls scopes and quotes UL 508A control panels. This page lines up fusible and non-fusible disconnect switches from five brands by UL ampere rating and the UL standard each catalog names, then shows how each line’s part numbers are built: series, rating, poles, fusing and options, with the catalog page for each.

Switches side by side

A matching row is a starting point, not an equivalent. Voltage rating, pole count, fuse class, horsepower at your voltage, short-circuit rating, and the handle and shaft all have to be checked before a switch can be substituted. Send the list and we’ll check it against your ratings. Meisterline Controls can also quote the panel it goes into.

Rated current is the UL ampere rating each brand prints for the switch (general-use rating where the catalog names one). UL standard is the standard the catalog states for that series: UL 98 (enclosed and dead-front switches), UL 508 (industrial control equipment), UL 60947-4-1 or UL 489 (titles as Eaton prints them, p.V5-T8-2). One row per rated current and UL standard. Each brand’s series at exactly that rating and standard sit in its column, with the columns in alphabetical order. There is no anchor line and no nearest-size rule: every series is placed by its own catalog rating. “(Recognized)” marks a series the catalog calls UL Recognized. “(Convertible)” marks a switch that serves fusible or non-fusible duty depending on a separately ordered fuse kit; it appears in both tables.

The size number in a part number is not always the UL rating. ABB’s OT16F is rated 20 A and the OT25F 30 A (BuyLog p.9-55); Square D’s Vario and TeSys VLS switches print a UL and an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) figure, and the UL figure is used here (Digest p.8-5, p.8-10). Horsepower isn’t published in the catalog data we hold for comparison, so it isn’t a column.

In scope: alternating current (AC) disconnect switches, open and enclosed, from the catalogs listed under the tables. UL 489 molded case switches have their own table below the fusible table. Not in these tables: direct current (DC) and photovoltaic switches, double-throw, changeover and transfer switches, and cam switches.

Non-fusible disconnect switches

Siemens 3LD2, 3LD3 and 3LD5 open switch disconnectors aren’t named in either table. Section 18 prints “Certification according to UL standard: UL 508” and “UL60947-4-1 / UL489” (p.18/55) and “certified according to UL489 … also certified according to UL508” (p.18/87), and our data doesn’t hold their UL listing as stated by the brand. Siemens CFS466J and CFS467L 4-pole switches appear only in a footnote (“also available”, p.18/107), and no UL statement was found for Siemens MMS switches. Double-throw switches are outside these tables.

These rows hold series whose UL standard the catalog does not settle. The Allen-Bradley 1494G heavy industrial and 1494F have no standard placed under their columns in the standards row of 1494-TD002F. The Siemens 3LD2 enclosed is described as listed and marked suitable for use as a motor disconnect, with no standard named. The Siemens MCS is described as UL Recognized, with no standard named. The Square D TeSys VLS size 1, 16 through 63 A, is given as UL 508 on pages 8-2 and 8-9 and as UL 60947-4-1 on page 8-10.
2
The ABB EOT560 enclosed UL 508 switch is left off this row. BuyLog Section 9 prints it as 50 A on page 9-94 and as 60 A on pages 9-93 and 9-95.
3
ABB’s OT160G is UL Listed at 100 A and UL Recognized at 125 A (BuyLog Section 9, p.9-43), so it sits in the 100 A row.
4
Eaton prints “Suitable as Motor Disconnect” for R5 switches from 16 to 80 A (p.V5-T8-10). The 100 A R5B is outside that range. Allen-Bradley’s hazardous-location 1494G is printed as one catalog number at this rating, 1494G-DH3N-203W (1494-TD002F p.45).

Eaton’s R4H is the 30 A compact (H-frame) fusible switch, listed to UL 489 under file E305341, where the other R9 fusible frames are listed to UL 98 (p.V5-T8-26, p.V5-T8-60).
2
These rows hold series whose catalog doesn’t settle the UL standard. The note under the 16 A row of the non-fusible table names each one.

Molded case switches (UL 489)

A molded case switch is built in a molded case circuit breaker frame and listed to UL 489, without overcurrent protection for the circuit it feeds (Rockwell’s table reads “Molded case switch (no overcurrent protection)”, 140G-TD101E p.93). Square D lists its PowerPacT switches as automatic molded case switches and Siemens lists its Sentron switches as self-protective; check each catalog’s note on what that means before substituting one for another. Rows are the rated current; each cell names the frames at that rating, with poles, voltage and the catalog page (PDF page numbers in the documents named under the table). Lines the brand is phasing down are marked.

A series is placed in these tables only where the catalog states its UL listing or recognition. Enclosed switches are shown for ABB (EOT, EOS), Allen-Bradley (1494G, 1494H) and Siemens (VBII, 3LD2 enclosed), from the catalogs above.

UL 508 and UL 98 switches are applied differently. Eaton’s catalog (p.V5-T8-2) describes UL 98 switches as “used as disconnecting means without restrictions”, and UL 508 switches as manual motor controllers that can be used as a disconnect only when marked “suitable as motor disconnect”, installed on the load side of the branch circuit protective device, and not used as the main disconnect of a panel. Square D’s catalog describes its Vario switches as UL 508 manual motor controllers marked “Suitable as Motor Disconnect”, for installation on the load side of the motor branch circuit protection (p.8-5). A UL 508 row and a UL 98 row at the same current are not interchangeable.
The switch, its handle and its shaft are often separate part numbers. ABB prints “Handle and shaft are not included” on its OT ordering pages (p.9-55), Eaton builds a switch from switch body, shaft and external handle (p.V5-T8-6), and Square D builds an LK or GS switch from switch, shaft and handle (p.8-24). Allen-Bradley’s 1494F and 1494U and Siemens’ MCS take fusing through a separately ordered kit (1494-TD002F p.7 and p.26; Section 18 p.18/103). Count those parts when comparing lines.

How each line’s part numbers are built

Each section uses only that line’s own catalog, with the page for every code. Where two pages of the same catalog disagree, the item is left out and noted.
